Ford Motor Company – America’s largest domestic hybrid seller – is further broadening its aggressive electrification plan and second generation of hybrid technology with the new Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The vehicle is revealed today at the New York International Auto Show.

Lincoln’s first-ever hybrid is expected to deliver at least 41 miles per gallon in the city when it goes on sale this fall.

The new premium midsize sedan hybrid joins Ford Motor Company’s growing lineup of hybrids, including the Ford Fusion Hybrid – 2010 North American Car of the Year and America’s most fuel-efficient sedan – plus the Ford Escape Hybrid and Mercury Milan and Mariner Hybrids.

Introduction of the new Lincoln MKZ Hybrid also complements Ford’s aggressive global electrification plan. Ford is introducing five new electrified vehicles by 2013. They include the

Transit Connect Electric in late 2010, the Focus Electric in 2011, a next-generation hybrid electric vehicle and a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in 2012, followed by another next-generation hybrid electric vehicle in 2013.

The Lincoln MKZ Hybrid’s projected fuel economy tops its nearest competitor – the 2010 Lexus HS 250h – by 6 mpg. It also trumps the Lexus with room for one more passenger and more standard luxury and segment-exclusive safety features.

The 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid uses Ford’s second-generation hybrid technology – the 2.5-liter

Atkinson-cycle I-4 hybrid engine, named one of Ward’s 2010 “10 Best Engines.”

The system combines the best attributes of the gasoline engine and electric battery-driven motors to deliver optimal performance and fuel economy.

Industry-leading fuel economy comes without sacrificing power. The combined gasoline engine and electric motor provide 191 net horsepower. Plus, the pure electric mode on the Lincoln MKZ

“The Ford Flex leaves plain-vanilla crossovers behind with its distinctive styling, and it has all the comfort and convenience features required to be a great transcontinental family tourer while performing equally well in getting the kids to softball practice,” he said. “It drives better than some midsize sedans, offers comfortable seating for seven, and boasts a long list of available interior amenities including an array of infotainment features and even a small refrigerator.”

In January, Ford defied a slow economy that sent its U.S.-based rivals into bankruptcy protection, posting a $2.7 billion profit for 2009. It was the automaker's first annual profit in four years.

The company said it expects to remain in the black this year. UBS Securities LLC analyst Colin Langan this week raised his 12-month price target for Ford shares from $13 to $15. He kept Ford's rating at "buy" and predicted that it would gain more market share from crosstown rivals Chrysler Group LLC and General Motors Corp. than recall-plagued Toyota Motor Corp.

Several Ford models now consistently score above Honda Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. in widely followed rankings by Consumer Reports magazine. The Japanese automakers had been considered quality leaders.

Other models, including the midsize Fusion and its cousin, the Mercury Milan, consistently have been at or near the top of their classes, a trend that led Consumer Reports editors to declare that Ford is now making some vehicles with world-class reliability.

Ford is not without problems, though. The automaker finished last year with $34.3 billion in debt, up $7.4 billion from Sept. 30. The company took on $7 billion in debt it owes a retiree health care trust fund run by the United Auto Workers union. That puts Ford at a disadvantage to GM and Chrysler Group, which were able to shed debt in bankruptcy court.

Chief Financial Officer Lewis Booth said the company has "an uncompetitive balance sheet" and will work on cutting debt this year.

A focus on safety

Continuing Ford’s safety leadership includes engineering the Police Interceptor to pass 75-mph rear-end crash testing. Currently, the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor is the only pursuit sedan to meet this test.

The new Police Interceptor also features Ford’s exclusive Safety Canopy® side-curtain air bag rollover protection system to help protect front and rear outboard passengers in both rollover and side-impact crashes. The multiple side-curtain air bags use Ford’s unique Roll Fold technology to help them slip between the occupant and the side window.

Increased power, enhanced sophistication

Ford’s Police Interceptor engine strategy will provide a V6 lineup that performs equal to or better than V8 engines. The lineup comes with two powertrain options, allowing police to choose the powerhouse that best meets their patrol requirements.

A highly efficient 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering at least 263 horsepower and E85 compatibility is 25 percent more efficient than the 4.6-liter Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) V8 offered in the current Crown Victoria Police Interceptor.

Plus, an all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost™ V6 twin-turbocharged, direct-injection engine will deliver at least 365 horsepower and 350 ft.-lb. of torque across a broad rpm range.

EcoBoost brings municipalities and police fleet administrators the first ultra high-performance, yet environmentally friendly, police pursuit vehicle. Rigidly tested, police-tuned

Throughout its development, Ford’s new Police Interceptor has been put through the paces, undergoing a battery of torture tests to ensure its individual components can hold up to the rigorous driving styles of police professionals.

Certification testing designed by the Michigan State Police and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department evaluates the durability and capability of the vehicle through a variety of tests where the car’s systems are pushed to the limits for nearly an hour and a half – far exceeding the demands most patrol cars ever experience.

To meet the rigors of the durability testing, the brakes have been increased in size and performance. The cooling package is purpose-built as well, featuring a heavy-duty alternator and larger radiator. Its honeycomb grille is designed to work in harmony with the interior components, offering more air flow throughout the vehicle. Plus, the standard 18-inch steel wheels are vented, designed to work in concert with the enhanced brake system.

Front seats have been specially designed, with a lower bolster removed to better accommodate officers’ utility belts. Inserted into the seatback are anti-stab plates, designed to protect front-seat occupants.

The Police Interceptor second row also has been optimized to address police-specific needs. The vinyl seats are specially sculpted and set back to improve second-row space and maximize legroom. The back door hinges are modified to open up another 10 degrees versus traditional rear doors.

The Ford Police Interceptor also is equipped with a column shift specifically designed so the console area is free for the ever-increasing amounts of aftermarket police equipment necessary for officers to do their jobs.

Mustang is powered by a lightweight, all-aluminum 3.7-liter dual-overhead-cam (DOHC) V-6 engine that uses advanced engineering to deliver its combination of power and economy. Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) adjusts the valvetrain in microseconds depending on driver inputs, further contributing to the engine’s overall efficiency.

The fact that Mustang achieves its top fuel economy rating with the convenience of an automatic transmission also marks a shift in conventional wisdom. Ford engineered a modern six-speed automatic transmission with carefully calibrated gear ratios and shift programs to maximize economy, while still delivering high-horsepower driving fun.

“Advanced powertrains like our Ti-VCT V-6 and six-speed automatic really speak to the future of Mustang,” says Barb Samardzich, Ford vice president of Global Powertrain Engineering. “We’ve proven that, using technology, Ford can deliver both power and fuel economy.”

In addition to engine improvements, upgrades to Mustang’s body, powertrain and chassis design contribute to the higher fuel economy numbers for 2011. Examples include:

• New Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) system eliminates the drag of an engine-operated hydraulic power steering pump
• Six-speed manual and automatic transmissions allow lower cruising revs without sacrificing off-the-line performance
• Aerodynamic changes include improvements like a new front fascia, tire spats on the rear wheels, modified underbody shields, a taller air dam and an added rear decklid seal

The new 2011 Mustang already has more than 11,000 orders. Half of all the nationwide orders are for the car’s fuel-efficient 3.7-liter V-6 engine. The 2011 Mustangs are also being equipped with record levels of technology, giving customers the option of choosing navigation, high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps and rearview cameras.

The new 2011 Mustang goes on sale this spring and will be built at the AutoAlliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Mich.

Cleveland Engine Plant 1 Retooled

Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1’s V-6 engine is expected to represent two-thirds of Mustang’s volume this calendar year.

Ford’s $155 million investment there includes $121 million in manufacturing investment at the plant and $34 million for launch and engineering. Sixty new jobs have been added to the plant to support the new engine.

Specifically, the $121 million for the manufacturing facility supports continued investment in developing and re-tooling the plant’s flexible manufacturing systems in the assembly and component (cylinder block, head and crankshaft) areas.

Ford’s investment at Cleveland Engine Plant is supported by Ford’s green partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy. This Ohio plant is one of 11 Ford facilities in the U.S. participating in the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Incentives Program initiated by Congress and implemented by the Obama administration. The program is helping to develop advanced technology vehicles and strengthen American manufacturing across the country. This project is also supported by Ford’s state and local government partners primarily through training funds.

The investment represents the latest in Ford’s ongoing commitment to the Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1. Opened in 1951 as Ford’s first engine plant in Ohio, the facility has produced more than 35 million engines.

In 2004, Ford invested $350 million into the plant for redesign and installation of an all-new assembly line as well as block, crankshaft and cylinder head machining lines. The plant also led the way in 2009 with the introduction of Ford’s first EcoBoost engines, which use gasoline turbocharged direct-injection technology for up to 20 percent better fuel economy, 15 percent fewer CO2 emissions and superior driving performance versus larger displacement engines.

Nine New or Upgraded Powertrains This Year

Ford is introducing nine new or upgraded powertrains in North America for its 2011 model vehicles, representing $1.8 billion worth of investment in engineering and facilities. Among the nine powertrains are:

• * 6.2-liter V-8 gasoline engine for the F-Series Super Duty
• * 6.7-liter Power Stroke Diesel for the F-Series Super Duty
• * 6R140 heavy-duty TorqShift® automatic transmission for the F-Series Super Duty
• * 3.7-liter Ti-VCT V-6 engine for the Mustang
• * 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V-8 engine for the Mustang
• * Six-speed automatic transmission for the Mustang

The 2011 Mustang is the most technically advanced model yet of America's favorite sports car. Both V-6 and V-8 models feature Twin Independent Variable Valve Timing (Ti-VCT), double overhead cams, four-valves per-cylinder and free-flowing exhaust systems. Both models are available with six-speed manual or an upgraded 6-speed automatic transmission.

The 2011 Mustang is a strong example of Ford’s industry leading fuel economy gains. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Ford’s combined car and truck fuel economy has improved nearly 20 percent since 2004 – almost double the next closest competitor.

Additionally, Ford has lowered its tailpipe CO2 emissions more than any other automaker. Ford’s fleet-wide average of 434 grams per mile is 37 grams lower than the 2007 total and 25 grams lower than 2008.

The Milan also is a recommended buy of Consumer Reports.

Starting retail price, including destination charge, is on the high side, though. Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, with destination charge, is $28,905. But an option package that adds rearview camera, 12-speaker Sony sound, leather seats and moonroof, among other things, is included automatically on the Mercury brand's "build your own vehicle" website and boosts the price to $31,980.

In comparison, the 2010 Prius hatchback has a starting retail price of $22,150 with four-cylinder gasoline engine and seating for five. The five-passenger, 2010-Model Year Ford Fusion Hybrid starts at $28,675.

The Milan was revamped recently at the same time as the Ford Fusion because they are sibling cars, and both are built by Ford Motor Company. Mercury, a longtime Ford Motor brand, however, has suffered over the past fifteen (15) years in trying to find and establish a consistent, winning image with consumers.

But I found I didn't really care about the image of Mercury, because the Milan Hybrid was such an endearing sedan. Longer and wider than the Prius, the Milan Hybrid provides good space in front and back seats. There are nearly 3.5 inches more of shoulder room in the back seat of the Milan than in the Prius, and back-seat leg and headroom are a bit better in the Milan, too.

Trunk space is constrained by the battery pack at the rear seats, so it's down to 11.8 cubic feet from the 16.5 cubic feet in a non-hybrid Milan. But this Mercury hybrid still has more trunk space than the hybrid Lexus LS 600h.

The Milan Hybrid test car was solid-feeling and mostly quiet. I didn't notice a lot of exterior noise coming in as both wind noise and road noise were muted. Indeed, with electric power solely driving the wheels at slow speeds, the Milan Hybrid was ultra-quiet and I found myself noticing the mild, high-pitch whine of the electric system.

Steering was acceptable, though not exactly crisp. The ride over road bumps was comfortable and never punishing. In the meantime, body motions were well-managed, and the overall ride and handling seemed nicely put together. Even fit and finish on the test car was excellent, inside and out.

The 2.5-liter, double overhead cam, inline four cylinder uses the Atkinson cycle to better manage fuel economy and works well with the 106-horsepower electric motor.

The car would automatically select whether to travel in all-electric mode, all-engine mode or a combination, and the transition from one to another was smooth and pleasant.

The only transmission for the Milan Hybrid is a continuously variable tranny that's built for fuel economy. As in other hybrids, the Milan Hybrid could turn off the gasoline engine while the car sat at stoplights. Unlike earlier hybrid vehicles, the Milan's startup of the gas engine never was accompanied by a shudder or sensation of the engine running roughly.

So, it was easy to forget that I was driving a hybrid - except for a couple things. Brakes, which include a system to capture or regenerate brake energy for use by the electric motor, had a slight artificial feel at the pedal, as other hybrids do.

And the gauges in front of the driver have many hybrid power reminders, including a graph that shows whether the on-board battery for the electric motor is being tapped or refilled with energy.

The most intriguing item in the gauges, though, is a graphic vine plant that grows green leaves if a driver is making the most of fuel conservation and loses leaves if a driver is going pedal to the metal.

I didn't expect the plant to be such an incentive to drive economically. But I felt badly when the plant, all lush with leaves, earlier during my drive, lost leaves after I surged onto a highway and passed some cars.

Overall, with city and highway travel averaged together, I wound up with 33 mpg fuel use. This compares with a city/highway average of 25 mpg in the federal government ratings for a 2010 non-hybrid Milan with four-cylinder engine.

The leather on the seats seemed durable but not as soft to the touch as in some other cars. I felt a weird sensation at times of the front wheels binding as I made sharp U-turns, almost as if the car was all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. But only the non-hybrid Milan is available as an all-wheel drive model.

Standard safety features include curtain air bags and stability control. The Milan Hybrid earned five out of five stars in frontal crash protection for driver and passenger as well as driver protection in a side crash. The rear passenger protection rating in a side crash is four stars.

"We're talking about ... significant exterior improvements, an all-new interior, a vehicle that is quieter, and a vehicle that will be more fun to drive," Derrick Kuzak, Ford's group vice president of global product development, said last week.

Customers are to be able to pick from three new engines -- including a four-cylinder, 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine -- when it goes on sale this summer.

Ford introduced six-cylinder EcoBoost engines on several models last year, but the four-cylinder EcoBoost makes its debut in the Edge.

EcoBoost combines direct-injection technology and turbocharging to improve fuel economy without sacrificing power.

In addition to the small EcoBoost engine, Ford is offering a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 285 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque on the Edge. For the Edge Sport, Ford is offering a 3.7-liter V6 engine with 305 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque.

The Edge also will be the first vehicle to feature Ford's new MyFord Touch technology, which replaces traditional knobs and switches with a five-way controller on the steering wheel as well as a touch screen.

MyFord manages all climate, navigation, entertainment and communication functions.

In the past, what the automotive industry refers to as mid-cycle freshening typically resulted in minor styling changes. But last year, when Ford updated its Fusion midsize car, critics gushed about the changes, U.S. sales increased 22% and the vehicle won several major awards.

Explorer to have better fuel economy, inflatable seat belts

The new Explorer will deliver at least 25 percent better fuel economy than the current model. The vehicle will feature unibody construction, Ford’s EcoBoost engine technology, a six-speed transmission and lightweight materials. Ford will provide full details about the new Explorer later this year.

In addition, the next-generation Explorer will debut the auto industry’s first-ever production inflatable seat belts, designed to provide additional protection for rear-seat occupants – often children and older passengers who can be more vulnerable to head, chest and neck injuries. The inflatable rear seat belts spread crash forces over five times more area of the body than conventional seat belts, which helps to reduce pressure on the chest and to control head and neck motion for rear-seat passengers. Ford eventually plans to offer inflatable seat belt technology on other vehicles globally.

An economic infusion

In planning for the company’s future manufacturing presence in the state, Ford worked closely with Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, who led an effort in passing legislation that allows Ford to participate in Illinois’ Economic Development for a Growing Economy (EDGE) program, which provides tax incentives to businesses that commit to new investments and create or retain jobs in the state. This legislation allows Ford to participate in the EDGE program through payroll tax credits rather than corporate income taxes.

Ford’s investment of $400 million in Chicago-area manufacturing facilities and Explorer’s fuel economy improvement of at least 25 percent is also supported by Ford’s green partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy. Chicago Assembly Plant is one of 11 Ford facilities in the U.S. participating in the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Incentives Program initiated by Congress and implemented by the Obama administration. The program is helping to develop advanced technology vehicles and strengthen American manufacturing across the country. Ford, Nissan, Tesla, Fisker and Tenneco are all participants in this initiative.

The current Explorer and Explorer Sport Trac models are built at the company’s Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky. Shifting production of the next-generation Explorer to Chicago Assembly paves the way for Louisville Assembly to undergo transformation to a flexible, fuel-efficient small car plant from a truck-based SUV plant. Ford will begin producing new vehicles at Louisville Assembly based on its global C-car platform in 2011. The specific models will be named at a later date.

The Chicago Assembly Plant, opened in 1924, currently has approximately 1,200 employees working on one shift. Ford’s Chicago Stamping Plant, which opened in 1956, has approximately 700 employees on two shifts. Opened in 1955, Louisville Assembly Plant has approximately 1,000 employees operating on one shift.

Production of the next-generation Ford Focus will begin simultaneously in Europe and North America in late 2010, with individual market launches starting early in 2011. Launches in Asia, Africa and South America will follow. Initial production will be concentrated at the Saarlouis (Germany), Michigan (United States) and Chongqing (China) Assembly Plants.

The new Focus will be one of up to 10 unique models to be built from Ford’s new C-car platform. The first of these will be the new Ford C-MAX and Ford Grand C-MAX – unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show – for launch in Europe in the second half of 2010.

The new Ford Focus has been developed by a global team, led from Ford’s European small and medium vehicle center of excellence in Merkenich, near Cologne, Germany, with powertrain development led by a similar team at Ford’s technical center in Dunton, England. The vehicle has been engineered without compromise to meet all customer and legislative requirements of the major worldwide markets.

For the NAIAS preview, Ford is showing a completely new 2.0-liter gasoline engine for the North American market that features DI and Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) for enhanced performance and fuel efficiency. The new 2.0-liter DI Ti-VCT engine is up to 20 horsepower more powerful than the current 2.0 Duratec I-4 unit while contributing to projected fuel economy gains of more than 10 percent.

To maximize the performance and economy advantage enjoyed by the new Focus, the 2.0-liter DI Ti-VCT engine is mated with the latest dry-clutch six-speed Ford PowerShift automatic transmission. This transmission uses an advanced dual-clutch design, which alone can help to reduce fuel consumption by up to 9 percent compared to a traditional four-speed automatic.

Ford also has confirmed plans to begin building a full, battery electric vehicle in 2011 at its Michigan Assembly Complex, for sales in North America. It will be the company’s first battery electric passenger vehicle.

Within the cockpit, the most significant innovation is the company’s next-generation driver connect technology, MyFord,™ which provides the driver with a state-of-the-art combination of controls and display screens to operate the key vehicle features. The 2010 North American Truck of the Year recognizes the most outstanding vehicle of the year based on many factors, including innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value. To be eligible, vehicles must be all-new or substantially changed from the previous model. The jury is comprised of 50 automotive journalists in Canada and the United States, representing newspapers, magazines, web sites, television and radio shows.

This is the 17th year of the award, and the 2010 Ford Transit Connect was selected above nine other competitors. Ford has a bit of experience winning this award. Most recently, the F-150 was the 2009 North American Truck of the Year. A Ford vehicle has taken home the honors five times; more than any other brand.

The 2010 Ford Transit Connect is a global Ford product that can be adapted to multiple commercial business applications. It has more than double the cargo-carrying space of the Chevrolet HHR Panel, and it offers users a cargo payload of up to 1,600 pounds, which means that it can carry a larger payload than the full-size Dodge Ram 1500 standard-cab short-box pickup truck.

With 135 cubic feet of Transit Connect cargo volume, no other vehicle in the American market can deliver this combination of capacity and fuel economy.

Transit Connect is powered by a 2.0-liter I-4 engine with a four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. The vehicle offers double the fuel economy of full-size vans with a rating of 22 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

More than 600,000 Ford Transit Connects have been sold since 2003, to customers in 58 countries and on four continents.

The 2010 Fusion and Fusion Hybrid are the most fuel-efficient sedans in America. The new models offer more power, class-exclusive technologies – such as BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross Traffic Alert and Ford SYNC® – and more total passenger and luggage capacity than the Toyota Camry.

The Ford Fusion Hybrid was introduced as an all-new model for 2010. The Ford Hybrid team has developed a powertrain system that combines the best attributes of the gasoline engine and electric battery-driven motors to deliver the optimal experience for the customer in terms of driving performance and fuel economy. Additionally, the propulsion system for the Ford Fusion Hybrid transitions between gas and electric power and back more efficiently and seamlessly.

The overall system upgrade allows the Ford Fusion Hybrid to operate longer at higher speeds in electric mode. The hybrid vehicles can operate up to 47 mph in pure electric mode, approximately twice as fast as some competitors. Plus, the city driving range on a single tank of gas is expected to be more than 700 miles.

The Fusion Hybrid also offers drivers a way to be more connected to the hybrid driving experience, thanks to Ford’s SmartGauge™ with EcoGuide, a unique instrument cluster execution that helps coach drivers on how to optimize performance of their hybrid.

SmartGauge™ with EcoGuide features two high-resolution, full-color liquid crystal display (LCD) screens on either side of the analog speedometer that can be configured to show different levels of information, including fuel and battery power levels, and average and instant miles per gallon.

EcoGuide uses a multilayered approach to coach the driver to maximum fuel efficiency.

A tutorial mode built into the display helps the driver learn about the instrument cluster and the hybrid in a whimsical way that does not overpower. Technical enthusiasts will love the detailed gauges that will help them learn to become more efficient in their driving. Everyday drivers will love another new feature in this same gauge cluster.

Called “Efficiency Leaves,” the system “grows” leaves and vines on-screen to reward customers for efficient driving.

Instead, the Fusion sits demurely in the driveway, offering no commentary on the neighbors’ lack of environmental concern. Yet for a base price of $27,270 (right around the new-car average of $25,500), customers can buy a fuel-efficient family sedan that easily carries five normal-sized people in comfort. It also has sufficient trunk space for their luggage, a compliant suspension and enough high-tech gizmos and widgets to evoke a smile from even the most indifferent automotive appliance owner.

Motor Trend magazine named the model its Car of the Year for 2010 and it is one of three finalists for the North American Car of the Year award to be announced Monday. (Full disclosure: I am a member of the panel that votes on the latter award.)

The EPA says the Fusion Hybrid gets 41 mpg in the city and 36 mpg highway. In a week of mixed suburban driving, the test model scored 38 mpg. The Prius gets 50 mpg on the EPA’s city test, but that extra 9 mpg is not worth the tradeoffs in space, ride and handling for many customers.

My gas mileage was achieved in normal driving, with no babying it to boost efficiency. But the Fusion does have a novel dashboard video display that shows virtual vines which can, if the car is driven gently, sprout leaves to produce a nice, healthy-looking dashboard garden.

Failure to drive in a way that cultivated this garden sparked howls of outrage from the back seat, where my kids complained I was killing the leaves as they disappeared. So while it would be easy to dismiss the efficiency display as a silly gimmick, it is a hard-to-ignore reminder that with just a bit lighter pressure on the pedal, the Fusion Hybrid can get spectacularly good mileage. Hypermile fanatics do even better, but there are few regular drivers who are interested in driving as if the fuel in the tank is their last.

Ford previously launched a hybrid version of its Escape SUV, but it was more primitive than the Fusion. In addition its size and weight conspired against it, so the Escape only gets about 25 mpg in everyday mixed driving, hardly enough to bother buying a hybrid.

The Fusion features Ford’s second-generation hybrid system, a design which, like the one in the Escape, is technically similar to that used by Toyota. The Fusion Hybrid goes Toyota one better with its ability to drive on electric-only power at speeds as high as 47 mph. That electric power ultimately comes from gasoline in hybrid electric cars, but it is still fun to know that you can drive on electric-only power for longer periods and higher speeds, keeping the gas engine shut off. The Prius automatically starts its gas engine at 25 mph.

Because of the conceptual similarities the companies recognized the potential for inadvertent infringement of one another’s patents, so they wisely signed a cross-licensing agreement to avoid future legal headaches. It was a good plan but unfortunately was portrayed by some as a case of Ford buying Toyota’s technology. Ford’s design is entirely its own. The cross-licensing agreement was just an immunization against a plague of lawyers.

Ford’s less-heralded but skilled engineers also achieved a smooth driveability as the car switches modes between gas and electric when driving and between regenerating electricity and using regular hydraulic brakes when stopping. It is still possible to detect some of the mode changes, especially as the car regenerates power when slowing, but Ford’s balance of these modes is the best execution in a constantly improving science.

Ford has improved the whole Fusion model line for 2010. The original Fusion was a handsome car with strong specifications that promised to deliver an experience that would place the car ahead of the likes of Honda’s Accord. Alas, some of the details were amiss in that first iteration. It was a good, but not great, car.

For 2010, Ford has made the Fusion great. They tweaked the steering to make the car respond to input more faithfully. They upgraded the interior, with soft surfaces on the dashboard replacing hard plastic. They freshened the exterior styling to keep the car up-to-date in appearance. The result is a car that beats Accord and Camry across the whole model line. But the hybrid is the gem in Fusion’s crown and serves notice that Ford and the rest of the domestic industry should not be overlooked as relics of the industrial age.

2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid

Nerad says the Ford Fusion is “getting better with age.”

“We’ve always been fans of the Fusion platform, and while this isn’t a completely new vehicle, it has been more extensively redone than most cars are in mid-cycle, which has left it looking great both inside and out,” he said. “But we’re even bigger believers in the Fusion after seeing and driving the new hybrid version.”

Nerad says he is particularly impressed with the Fusion Hybrid because it drives like a conventional vehicle while still delivering outstanding fuel economy.

DEARBORN, April 17, 2009 – Ford Motor Company, continuing its rapid quality improvement, surpassed Honda in initial vehicle quality for the first time and reached new levels of customer satisfaction with vehicle quality, a new survey shows.

Ford is also statistically tied with Toyota at the top of the industry when it comes to initial vehicle quality, according to the 2009 U.S. Global Quality Research System (GQRS) survey conducted quarterly for Ford by RDA Group of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

“This is truly a significant accomplishment for us,” said Bennie Fowler, Ford group vice president, Global Quality. “Honda and Toyota have claimed bragging rights for years, but now we are seeing our hard work pay off. It’s evident in study after study.”

The latest GQRS survey measured 2009 model year vehicle initial quality in two categories: the number of “things gone wrong,” and customer satisfaction with vehicle quality in the first three months of ownership.

In the first quarter of 2009, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles saw things gone wrong fall by 5 percent to 1,228 per 1,000 vehicles, significantly better than Honda’s 1,422 things gone wrong per 1,000 vehicles and statistically equal to Toyota’s 1,150.

In addition, the survey shows that Ford Lincoln Mercury improved two percentage points to 79 percent in customer satisfaction with vehicle quality, which puts Ford’s domestic brands in a tie with Toyota and Honda for industry leadership.

“Ford’s commitment to quality is really paying off as they continue to rival Honda and Toyota on both initial quality and customer satisfaction with the quality,” said Donald Pietrowski, president, RDA Group.

The following models led their respective segments in the survey:

• Ford Mustang – initial quality and customer satisfaction for sports cars
• Ford Taurus – initial quality for large cars
• Ford Taurus X – initial quality for crossover utilities
• Mercury Milan – initial quality for midsize cars
• Ford Ranger – initial quality for compact pickups

The new 2009 Ford F-150 recorded quality levels that equate to less than one problem per vehicle, as did the Taurus, Taurus X, Fusion, Milan, and Edge.

“We are energized by the continuous improvement we are seeing on both initial vehicle quality and customer satisfaction,” said Fowler. “This survey validates the hard work and dedication to quality from Ford employees, suppliers and dealers. We will keep the momentum going as we strive to become the clear global quality leader.”

The GQRS study is conducted on a quarterly basis with scores assessed from survey responses collected from owners of vehicles purchased within specific short-term time frames.

New vehicle owners are asked to report any defects or issues as well as rate their satisfaction with vehicle quality on a scale of 1 to 10 across an array of vehicle systems and features.

The offer comes as auto sales have been battered by the recession and tight credit.

Ford said Tuesday it will cover payments of up to $700 each month for up to a year on any new Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicle if consumers lose their jobs. The program runs until June 1.

Hyundai Motor Co. has been offering a deal that allows buyers to return a vehicle within a year if they can't make the payments due to a job loss or disability. That offer helped curb the decline in the South Korean carmaker's U.S. sales in February.

Dearborn, Mich.-based Ford is also offering zero percent financing on certain Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles.

"Consumers remain anxious about the economy and their own outlook for the future," Ken Czubay, vice president of sales and marketing, said in a statement.

Ford's announcement comes a day after President Barack Obama said the government will back new car warranties issued by General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC, who have accepted federal assistance and are seeking more, to help boost consumer confidence about buying their vehicles.

Ford has not requested federal bailout funds.

Ford also said that it will offer more details in April on its program to help charities affected by the economic downturn.

Ford's shares rose 6 cents to $2.82 in premarket trading Tuesday.

Mulally will take an additional 30 percent cut in salary this year and next as he battles a global financial crisis and the worst U.S. sales climate in 27 years. His counterparts at General Motors and Chrysler, Rick Wagoner and Robert Nardelli, are getting a $1 annual salary while surviving on $17.4 billion on U.S. loans and seeking $21.6 billion more.

Ford is cutting the pay of its top executives to reduce costs and conserve cash "in response to the difficult global economic climate," according to a preliminary proxy filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Mulally earned $21.67 million in 2007, his first full year after joining the automaker from Boeing Co. His cash compensation dropped 78 percent in 2008. He received $2 million in salary, unchanged from 2007, and no bonus, down from $4 million in 2007. He won't get a bonus this year.

Ford also said it will :

• Eliminate 2009 merit increases for salaried employees in the United States and most other global markets.
• Drop annual incentive compensation program bonuses for 2008 and 2009 for global salaried employees.
• Provide no cash compensation to board members in 2009.

Adverse impact

"Ford is acutely aware that current economic conditions have had a significant adverse impact on our shareholders, customers, dealers, employees and other stakeholders," the company said.

"We do not view these actions as merely symbolic, but as a necessary step in the restructuring of our business in which all our stakeholders have been asked to participate."

Ford lost $14.67 billion last year, its third consecutive year without a profit. The company says it has enough cash to weather the downturn without turning to the U.S. for help.

Ford detailed the total compensation of five other top executives in addition to Mulally:

• CFO Lewis Booth earned $4.74 million, down 54 percent. Booth's salary rose from $868,133 in 2007 to $1.08 million in 2008.
• Mark Fields, president of the Americas, earned $4.83 million, down 42 percent. His salary rose from $1.26 million in 2007 to $1.3 million last year.
• Jim Farley, group vice president of marketing and communications, earned $2.65 million. His salary was $700,000. Ford paid Farley, who joined the company from Toyota Motor Corp. in late 2007, a bonus of $660,000. That was part of the package to attract him from Toyota and offset the forfeiture of certain compensation there.
• General Counsel David Leitch earned $2.62 million. That included $850,000 in salary and a $150,000 bonus related to a retention award granted in 2006.
• Former CFO Don Leclair earned $3.20 million, down 73 percent. His salary fell to $875,000, from $1.01 million. Leclair retired in October.

Unusual

Ford said a preliminary proxy is required by the SEC this year because of an out-of-the-ordinary proposal to shareholders.

The company is seeking approval to issue common stock related to the recent UAW agreement on funding a retiree health-care trust. Ford needs that shareholder approval in order to proceed with plans to use company stock to fulfill up to 50 percent of its cash obligations to that trust, known as a Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association, or VEBA.

Ford said New York Stock Exchange rules call for a company to get shareholder approval for a stock issuance that would total 20 percent or more of outstanding common stock. If Ford uses stock to meet 50 percent of the VEBA obligation, company officials estimate that the series of transactions would exceed that 20 percent threshold with just the first couple scheduled contributions.

The VEBA proposal is one of 11 on Ford's annual meeting agenda. At least two shareholder proposals call for Ford to rein in executive pay, including one that would limit compensation to $10,000 per week. Ford is opposing those proposals.

Another, repeated from past years, calls for the voting power of the Ford family's special shares to be reduced. Currently, 16 votes are allowed for each of the family's Class B shares. The Ray T. Chevedden and Veronica G. Chevedden Family Trust is seeking for that to be reduced to one vote per share.

The trust points out that approval for equal shareholder voting has increased in each of the last three years. Ford also recommends that shareholders vote against the proposal.

Through January, Ford Motor Co.'s retail-market share had risen for four consecutive months for the first time in 14 years, and that share was coming from General Motors and Chrysler. New data from CNW Market Research show that 19% of consumers who planned to buy a GM passenger car in January or February instead bought a Ford, Lincoln or Mercury. Some 15% of people who set out to buy a Chrysler or Dodge car in January instead switched to one of Ford's brands. "Times like these can provide opportunities for us to distance ourselves for the long term," said Ford's Ken Czubay, VP-sales and marketing. "We are doing fine from a conquest standpoint."

Indeed, in the first two months of the year, the number of qualified buyers who planned to buy a Ford jumped 16% from 2008, CNW said. Qualified buyers who intended to buy GM fell 12% and Chrysler 33%.

Huge Leap

That's a remarkable feat for Ford, considering that until three years ago, it was running ads tagged with the rather pathetic plea, "If you haven't looked at a Ford lately, look again."

"To be able to grow even a little bit of share in such a tough market is an accomplishment," said Cameron McNaughton, president of auto consultant TreeFarm Partners. "Ford is doing a terrific job."

More impressive is that Ford has moved up in America's estimation even though it has not touted in marketing the fact that it hasn't accepted a government handout. Ford said it never really considered doing so, figuring its limited funding is better spent on brand building.

But another reason may be it simply doesn't need to. CNW President Art Spinella said 93% of Americans already know Ford is not now dependent on government funds, while 95% of consumers polled by his company know GM and Chrysler are on the dole. Any ads by Ford along lines "would absolutely be the wrong thing to do because it would look like they're dancing on GM's and Chrysler's graves," Mr. McNaughton said.

Keeping Quiet

"For Ford right now, the right way to handle this is to stick to their knitting," said one top industry creative with knowledge of auto accounts. "They should say the positive things about the quality of Ford products, as they've made huge strides, and their products are much, much better than ever before." He added: "The PR that they are getting around the whole bailout is doing that job for them."

Of course, there's also the real chance that Ford may have to stretch out its hand after all if its reorganization plans don't work out. Ford also felt the brunt of the industry's worst sales in 40 years. Ford, Lincoln and Mercury's U.S. sales plunged 48% to 96,044 units vs. February 2008. And though Ford's retail share had climbed for four months, in February its retail share fell one point to 11.5%, which it attributed to an industrywide drop in full-size pickup sales, a category it dominates.

But if consumers were going to buy a truck, they were likely to think Ford. CNW data show that 32.6% of Americans who intended to buy a GM truck in January or February instead chose a Ford Motor product. Ford had the highest conquest rates from GM among the six biggest car companies and was tops for winning over consumers who initially intended to buy a Chrysler truck.

Even so, the Ford brand still has a way to go when it comes to cars. Toyota and Nissan managed to grab more consumers who intended to buy Chryslers, according to CNW.

Newfound Confidence

With its newfound strength, Ford has also regained its ad swagger. The company is displaying a strong tone of confidence in its launch ads for the second-generation Ford Fusion midsize gas-powered sedan and first Fusion Hybrid. Ford's Matt Van Dyke, director-marketing communications, said the multimedia blitz, which includes four months of TV advertising that broke last week, targets the so-called "upper purchase funnel" of people who aren't in the market for a vehicle.

That strategy is the opposite of the one GM, Chrysler and other automakers in the crumbling new-vehicle market have been using, which is to heavily aim at people lower in the funnel, or closer to purchase.

Ford's approach will allow it to build brand equity and demonstrate that when Americans are ready to buy, there will be a Ford in their future. Mr. McNaughton said he likes the straightforwardness of Fusion's launch TV spots from WPP Group's JWT Team Detroit, which highlight fuel efficiency and the vehicle's Sync technology. "People don't want dancing girls; they want facts and information."

The automaker is also taking a different road in trying to wean itself off incentives. "We are zigging while some are zagging in the incentive world, and this is the way Ford Motor Co. is going to build for the future," Mr. Czubay said.

Incentive spending in the industry overall was up $400 per vehicle from January to February but down $800 at Ford, said George Pipas, sales-analysis manager for the U.S. at Ford.

"Retail messages with $5,000 off aren't enough" to woo buyers these days, Mr. McNaughton said. "Ford is taking the higher ground. That's really smart."

Fusion's $28,000 starting price is more or less in reach, the driving feel is good, and the interior has a premium look and feel.

There are three facets to consider in evaluating a gasoline-electric hybrid: the underlying vehicle itself, the hybrid system and the mileage.

Assuming the preproduction Fusion hybrid test car was representative — Ford says it was — the Fusion's scores in those three categories are good, great and adequate, but potentially, very good.

The Toyota Prius crowd will protest. Prius is lower-priced, has about the same room inside, has a handy hatchback configuration, gets better mileage — and most of those attributes could improve when the 2010 Prius goes on sale in a few months — so how could Fusion be the best hybrid?

Simple. Fusion drives better. A car is, after all, a driving machine. Brownie points for saving somewhat more fuel or offering a cargo-friendly hatchback, but driving feel is most important.

And there, Fusion is without equal among hybrids.

Here's a look:

• The car. A slick machine, regardless of powerplant. Smooth looks. Good manners. Adequate space. Comfortable accommodations. Above-average ambience.

Ford launched Fusion as a gasoline-only car in 2005 as a 2006 model.

It's getting a midcycle update for 2010, including a hybrid version for the first time, which will begin arriving at dealers mid-March.

The hood has a wide, demi-dome bulge, and the grille and rump are tweaked a bit.

The grille now looks as if it was done that way on purpose.

A commendable change: The turning circle is 2 feet narrower. No more back-and-forth getting into or out of a tight parking spot at the shopping mall. The change makes the car feel more nimble overall, not just when docking in a narrow slot.

• Hybrid system. The basic four-cylinder gasoline engine is a 2.5-liter, up from a 2.3-liter in previous Fusions. A little more oomph is the welcome result. The aural signature could be better — it comes down on the coarse side when spurred hard — but isn't a deal-breaker. The electric motor delivers more crank than you get from the gas engines in most small cars.

And the miracle is how Ford blends the two. There was no — none, nada, zip — vibration or shimmying in the test car when the gasoline kicked in to help the electric. No other hybrid — not even that $107,000 Lexus — can make that claim 100% of the time.

Fusion's main rivals, Camry and Nissan Altima hybrids, shake a lot when their gasoline engines join the party, Altima especially.

And no, it's not worth accepting the lack of refinement as a price for saving fuel. It'll make you bitter and crazy after a while, wincing in advance knowing that shudder is due any second.

One Ford trick: using the engine's electronic controls to halt the gasoline engine just at the point in the crankshaft rotation where a cylinder is ready to fire again.

There was a distant shudder when the Fusion's gasoline engine restarted after stopping at a red light, as all hybrids do to save fuel. But it was milder than in any other hybrid tested, so minor as to be inconsequential.

The other great thing about the Fusion hybrid is information delivery. You can pick how much hybrid-related data you want on the instrument panel. Regardless of how much you ask for, Fusion delivers it informatively, no scolding or overwhelming you, as other hybrids do.

Yes, there's the "atta way" pictograph of leaves growing into a wreath if you drive just so. But you can shut that off.

• Mileage. Mediocre for a hybrid in the test, but the mileage numbers were continuing to climb even as the test ended. And the car registered 40-plus miles per gallon in a couple of short trips that usually return crummy, not outstanding, mileage.

Best guess: Moderate, but not mileage-obsessed, drivers could get 35 mpg or so in suburban settings. Not the 41 government rating, but impressive for a 3,720-pound midsizer.

Fusion's city mileage rating is better than Camry's 33 mpg, but does it get more in real life? Probably depends more on the driver than the car.

Even if the Fusion gets lower real-world results, it's still much smoother and a whole lot nicer to drive.

More about the 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid

What? Gasoline-electric hybrid version of midsize, four-door, front-drive Fusion that's been updated for 2010 model year. Ford's Mercury brand sells the nearly identical Milan.

Electric motor: 106 hp at 6,500 rpm, 166 lbs.-ft. the moment it begins to turn (an appealing attribute of electric motors). Ford says net combined hp is 191, but declines (like most hybrid makers) to specify net combined torque.

Continuously variable automatic transmission blends power from the gas, electric powerplants.

How fancy? Lots standard, including expected bags, belts, stability and traction controls and power accessories, plus the unexpected: Free six-month satellite radio service (Sirius), 110-volt outlet, six-CD stereo (instead of the typical single setup), dual-zone climate control, auto on-off headlights, auto-dimming mirror, backup alarm. In other words, you actually could abide the base Fusion hybrid.

How big? On the small end of the midsize scale. Fractionally bigger outside than Toyota Camry hybrid, slightly smaller inside, but has a bigger trunk.

Fusion hybrid is 190.6 inches long, 72.2 in. wide, 56.9 in. tall on a 107.4-in. wheelbase.

Passenger space is listed as 99.8 cubic feet, trunk as 11.8 cu. ft. Weight listed as 3,720 lbs. Turning diameter is 37.5 ft.

How thirsty? Rated 41 miles per gallon in town, 36 on the highway, 39 in combined driving.

Test car trip computer showed 27.2 mpg (but was continuing to climb when test period ended) in 300 miles of suburban driving. Registered a remarkable 41.4 mpg in one 5.1-mile suburban trip, 44 mpg in a 3.1-mile hop, driven normally, no nursing.

Tank holds 17 gallons. Regular (87 octane) gasoline is specified.

Overall: Best hybrid.

The proposal, championed by the National Automobile Dealers Association, was added to an economic stimulus bill under debate in the Senate. The vote was 71-26.

The provision was not in a House-passed version of the more than $800 billion package of spending increases and tax cuts.

A conference committee will decide whether the provision stays in. The bill is a top priority of President Barack Obama.

If the measure passes, taxes on auto loans will be deductible for the first time since 1986.

The provision on deductibility of loan interest is the first significant measure aimed at getting consumers back into showrooms and buying vehicles to get action from Congress. NADA says the measure will save consumers about $1,500 on a $25,000 vehicle.

Some experts have criticized the provision for not having enough up-front punch. Too many worried would-be buyers aren't thinking ahead to cutting future tax bills, they argue.

But the measure is a significant incentive and NADA had to focus on what could be accomplished politically, an organization spokesman said today.

In the past two years alone, Ford has reduced its warranty repairs costs by $1.2 billion, according to the latest company figures. These savings can be attributed to four straight years of quality improvements on Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. Ford’s initial quality is now in a virtual tie with Honda-Acura and Toyota-Lexus-Scion for the 2008 model year, according to the latest U.S. Global Quality Research System (GQRS) study.

Ford strives to be best in class in every phase of vehicle development – from design to pre-delivery – internal measures continue to show the company is making significant quality strides.

For example:

• The warranty repair rate for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles in the United States is now almost 50 percent lower than it was in 2004.
• Ford F-Series Super Duty and Lincoln Mark LT rank atop their respective segments with fewest “things gone wrong” (TGW) and in customer satisfaction.
• Ford Mustang GT500 had the least number of TGWs among sports cars.
• Overall, 18 of 24 Ford domestic brand vehicles posted TGW improvements.

“Ford is following a set of standardized processes around the world in product development, manufacturing and purchasing with a discipline this company has never seen,” said Bennie Fowler, Ford group vice president, Global Quality.

Continued Improvements

The drive to improve quality is most evident during a new-model launch. Since 2005, each new model from Ford has consistently delivered better quality – as measured by warranty rates and things-gone-wrong metrics – than the models they replaced.

“The last 24 months have revealed some our best quality results,” said Curt Yun, director, Global Warranty. “Our new models have been achieving continuously declining warranty repair rates and lower warranty costs, as a direct result of our overall quality improvements.”

In the U.S., for example, owners of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles have reported fewer concerns at three years in service for each of the past five years, according to the Global Quality Research System (GQRS) survey, compiled for Ford by the research firm RDA Group.

“We’ve reached the point where our initial quality is second to none among the full-line manufacturers,” said Fowler. “We expect that high quality to be reflected in future high-mileage surveys as our new models age.”

Built-in Design Quality

Ford’s Global Product Development System ensures quality is built-in early in the process. It starts with the company’s commitment to develop and implement consistent standardized engineering processes. By fully utilizing Computer Assisted Design toolsets, Ford is signing off on all aspects of its designs even before the first prototype is built.

Ford’s design and engineering analysis processes makes it possible for problems that previously might not have surfaced until launch to be flagged and corrected in the virtual world. Ford uses cutting edge virtual tools to verify up to 40,000 design standards in its Virtual Engineer Lab. Virtual technology also is used to confirm that the product can be manufactured with quality in the assembly plant for which it is slated.

Manufacturing Quality Process

Ford also provides assembly plant teams the necessary tools to deliver quality in the manufacturing process. For example, the company’s Quality Operating System (QOS) is critical for identifying and correcting problems within the manufacturing facilities.

QOS is implemented in each plant by Variability Reduction Teams (VRT) – cross-functional groups of engineers, plant management and product specialists, including the company’s most skilled problem solvers who’ve been trained through Six Sigma. Each team is assigned to one of 12 vehicle subsystems crucial to customer satisfaction, such as paint or body interior, and examines every detail, looking for imperfections so slight that even the untrained eye, or ear, could not detect them.

For example, Ford’s 2010 Taurus was subjected to rigorous testing for squeaks and rattles at each design phase. Every inch of the vehicle was scrutinized for unwanted noise from the outside in, down to the sound of the Easy Fuel™ Capless Fuel Filler door when it’s closed.

Another example includes the development of Ford’s new fuel-efficient 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine. By the time the first twin-turbocharged, direct injection engine is decked to a 2010 Lincoln MKS this summer at the Chicago Assembly Plant, the equivalent of more than one-million grueling test miles will have been logged by EcoBoost prototypes.

Ford also uses a process called Early Claims Binning to help streamline communications about potential quality issues between plants and dealerships. Warranty claims are fed to the assembly plant every day where the issue is dissected and either traced back to the installation process and addressed on-site or fed back to the design engineer for resolution in design.

Customer-driven Quality

Ford’s commitment to deliver the best quality possible for its customers is unwavering and the company is committed to pushing its quality levels even higher.

As Ford’s newest vehicles hit the road, company officials expect warranty claims to continue their downward trend.

“I see the recent $1.2 billion in worldwide warranty cost savings as a compelling reason to continue down this path,” Yun said. “Instead of setting aside those funds to fix cars, we’d much rather invest it in exciting product programs for our customers.”

Ford’s commitment to world-class quality extends beyond preventing things that go wrong. Customer-driven product features, such as fuel economy, craftsmanship, and quiet interiors are designed into the vehicle to deliver an exceptional and affordable ownership experience.

Lincoln is the first automaker to offer luxury customers a premium hybrid vehicle with an MSRP that matches its conventional gas sibling.

2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid redefines future of American luxury The new 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is a game-changing vehicle that offers modern car buyers all the indulgence of a premium midsize sedan and all the environmental benefits of a hybrid vehicle at an amazing price.

Building on Ford’s reputation as a world leader in electrified technology, the 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid uses the company’s second-generation hybrid technology – the 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle I-4 hybrid engine – named one of Ward’s 2010 “10 Best Engines.” The system combines the best attributes of the gasoline engine and electric battery-driven motors to deliver optimal performance and fuel economy.

The Lincoln MKZ Hybrid delivers a 41 mpg fuel economy rating in the city, topping its only near competitor – the 2010 Lexus HS 250h – by 6 mpg. It also trumps the Lexus with more passenger space, more standard luxury and segment-exclusive safety features.

The 2009 F-150, new inside and out, is the new benchmark for full size pickups, appealing to a growing number of core truck customers. During the past five years, the "core trucker" - those who use their truck's towing and hauling capability for work and play - has grown to 40 percent from 30 percent of the light-duty full-size pickup market.

In the commercial/fleet portion of this core trucker sub-segment, Ford F-Series continues to dominate. The F-150 has 46 percent of the light duty commercial/fleet market; and Super Duty is stronger still with over 57 percent of heavy duty commercial/fleet market.

2009 F-150 improvements include a new high-strength, lighter-weight chassis that delivers even more horsepower, unsurpassed fuel economy and class-leading towing and payload capacity.

From industry-first SYNC to Ford Work Solutions, 2009 F-150 sports an array of smart technologies. SYNC provides hands-free, in-car communication. Ford Work Solutions is an innovative suite of options including an in-dash computer with Internet access, Tool Link to track tools, Crew Chief technology to dispatch workers and reduce vehicle operating costs and Cable Lock to improve security of tools and equipment.

F-150 also features conveniences such as the Box Side Step and Tailgate Step that help customers easily gain access to the truck's pickup box.

The new F-150 delivers class-leading towing capability of 11,300 pounds and hauling capacity of 3,030 pounds - a combination no other competitor can match.

For 2009, F-150 also has improved its fuel economy by an average of 8 percent across the entire lineup, thanks to a wide range of engineering enhancements. The fuel economy gains reach as high as 12 percent versus the prior model year on F-150 models equipped with the high-volume three-valve, 5.4-liter V-8 engine. Plus, the F-150's SFE package - which is available on highest-volume XL and XLT series - delivers unsurpassed fuel economy of 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway.

The new 2009 F-150 is built at Ford's Dearborn (Mich.) Truck Plant and Kansas City Assembly Plant.
